Unclear string in help file

Hi all,
Can someone explain to me what this sentence actually means:
"In the <emph>Query Properties</emph> dialog, set properties belong to SQL Query, that you need your current task."

https://translations.documentfoundation.org/da/libo_help/translate.html#filter=incomplete&unit=40268920

I simply can't understand what this string is about.

Cheers,
Leif

Hi,

Hi all,
Can someone explain to me what this sentence actually means:
"In the <emph>Query Properties</emph> dialog, set properties belong to SQL
Query, that you need your current task."

https://translations.documentfoundation.org/da/libo_help/translate.html#filter=incomplete&unit=40268920

I simply can't understand what this string is about.

This is the Query Properties dialog:
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/File:Queryproperties.png

You can set DISTINCT and LIMIT keywords for your SELECT queries.

Best regards,
Andras

Hi Andras,
Thanks.
But i just can't make any sense of the string. Is this proper English?

/Leif

Hi :)
Andras' statement makes a lot more sense.  Maybe

"In the <emph>Query Properties</emph> dialog-box you can set the SQL Query's properties for the current task. "

Again it's just a suggestion and may need modification or a re-write.

Definitely not. We really need to get these new English strings reviewed by
(preferably) native speakers, this is getting embarrassing :frowning:

Yes. The question is, how? If someone volunteers, it's fine.
Otherwise, there are 50+ help translators, who can report bugs, the
earlier, the better. I think localizers did a really good job in this
4.1 beta cycle, and helped to improve the quality a lot. Please, keep
up the good work.

Thanks,
Andras

The English form is not that good.

For me I used:

In the <emph>Query Properties</emph> dialog, set properties belong to SQL
Query, that you need your current task.

In the <emph>Query Properties</emph> dialog, set the properties of SQL
Query that you need your current task.

maybe:

In the <emph>Query Properties</emph> dialog, set the SQL Query properties that you need for your current task.

Italo Vignoli

Correct. That´s what I´ve done. When suggesting I´ve made an literal
translation. Instead of "SQL Query properties" (correct) I´ve stated
"properties of SQL Query" (wrong).

My bad.

I prefer Italo's suggestion too.

Sergio's suggestions seemed fine except that they needed more "the"s and "that"s in English.  I suspect that translations of it would have been perfect.  With these sorts of things i think it helps for a few people to discuss and put forwards alternative suggestions to help us understand what the original was trying to say.  It is extra noise/traffic on the lists which some may object to but i think it helps get a better result.  Anyway, i think Italo nailed it and i like to think that Sergio and i helped him get there.

Changed to:

In the <emph>Query Properties</emph> dialog you can set two properties
of the SQL Query, i.e. whether to return distinct values, and whether
to limit the result set.

Hi
Can we push these to the Documentation team's mailing list?

Documentation@Global.LibreOffice.Org

It really is only an odd 2 or 3 at the moment.  It looks like people here are intelligent enough and have an excellent level of English so they are able to make sense of all the rest.  It only seems to be an odd few originals that are causing problems but we are all having trouble with those same 2 or 3 statements.

I also prefer Italo´s suggestion. But what Andras has done is also fine.

True. In Portugal we use more "The" and "That" than English language.
