Videos (mpeg etc) in Impress

Hello,

I wonder if I am missing something & if anyone else has this same problem: I
can embed videos in Impress but I have no control on how they start (simple
start on click would be fine), appear, leave or repeat. All the effects work
fine for images but inserted videos just start and run once. I am using
Impress in Mac, Win7 and Ubuntu 11.10, and have the same problem independent
of the OS. Apart from this, everything else works great but this is a
crucial feature for me (and keep me using other options such as PP and
Keynote).

Insert video into presentation slide

Use the menu bar options 'slide show|custom animation|misc. effects'

Add the options 'start media', 'end media' etc. and adjust timing,
order as appropriate.

As said in my original post, none of the controls work (under any operating
system [Linux, OSX, Win7] & I also tried different versions of LibreOffice
with no luck). In other words, the options 'start media', 'end media' etc.
and adjusting timing have no effect. They work ok for simple jpegs and other
pics, but have no effect on movies.

I can only state my personal observations. Described below are the
tasks I performed to control video play. An example video was
retrieved and saved to local hard disk:

http://cdn.kaltura.org/apis/html5lib/kplayer-examples/media/bbb400p.ogv

This video was renamed, e.g. 'examplevideo.ogv'.

A blank presentation was created

text 'text' was added to slide 1

to slide 2, the video was added using the menu bar 'insert|video and
sound'. Using the dialogue window 'custom animation', the misc.
effects
'toggle' and 'end media' were used

text 'more text' was added to slide 3

It was observed that starting the video is automatic. The video could
be paused and ended using the controls added. Also, it does not seem
possible to navigate backwards in a presentation which includes video
film content. This might be because my computer has low memory, or is
a bug.

I have exactly the same problem. So far as I can tell, NONE of the effects
options have any effect at all whatsoever.
If any one can prove me wrong just post a short impress presentation, 3
slides will do, with a short video on the 2nd one.

Howdy,

A "work around", perhaps, to make this do what you want.

Add your video clip to a page.
Add custom animation
-- select the 'Misc Effects' tab
-- select item 'Toggle Pause'
OK
In the Custom Animation sidbase
-- change the start property to 'After previous'

Add a secod custom animation
-- select the 'Misc Effects' tab
-- select item 'Start Media'
OK
Leave the start property as 'On Click'

That's do it. Works for me.

Many thanks for that, it proves to me that the problem is unquestionably with
the video playback.
If I replace the video by a photo, all the effects I am trying to apply
work ( fade in from slide background, fade out to slide background etc.) as
I would expect.
Replace the photo by a video and apply the same transitions and nothing has
any effect, it won't fade (in or out) just sits there showing the first
frame of the video until you start it, then shows the last frame after the
video finishes.
I'm not sure whether to regard this as a misfeature or a flat-out bug in the
media-player.
Since I don't think what I am trying to achieve is unreasonable, let me
spell it out in detail :-
1) Advance to slide in question - Displaying introductory text etc. only
2) Click - Video fades in from slide background, plays through, then fades
back to slide background.
3) Click to advance slide.

I could kludge up the effect by using a sequence of slides with rapid
transitions, but I want to be able to do it all on one slide so I can easily
re-order things.

Hi
I think it's worth posting a bug-report now

Hello Rotwang,

Yes - video and image are two very different things.

I misunderstood you question from the other day, perhaps.

Well, to state it simply, custom animations are not implemented for
video content - the only exception is start, end and toggle play.

Hi Drew, In which case two things ;-
First if it can't or won't apply fade-in fade-out etc. why are they offered?
When I select the video object ONLY the operations which I CAN perform on it
should be offered.

Second they SHOULD be useable because, whatever the internals of the system
may be, from the point of view of the author of a presentation there is NO
difference between a static photo and a video clip. I think I need to raise
this as a bug report, because for me its a complete show-stopper.

I am a semi-retired projectionist, which means anything from 3ft wide video
back projection upto 70mm film on a 50ft wide screen, including DCI2K
digital cinema projectors. I care about how things look.

Good point - it would certainly be a better situation if those actions not
valid for a given media type where not displayed or at least not selectable,
IMO.

Well, that is something you could do. I think I would go with two requests,
one on disabling selections that are not valid and a second about making
some or all of those animations available.

Are you familiar with our issue system?
