VLOOKUP and HTML cutcopypasta

I'm using a VLOOKUP to filter and find data from a spreadsheet where I am cut-copy-pasting the information from a website (tabular format) and I am getting an NA back. Is there a common problem I should be looking for with this type of import?

Are you pasting straight to calc?.
Sometimes I have found I need to paste special into writer as HTML and then copy/past that table into calc.
