Weblate: help ranking what you need :)

Hi all,

The Board would like to dedicate a budget to fund some Weblate issues/enhancements and I'd like to have your feedback on what would be the most important for your team.

Below is a list of tickets that I monitor on Weblate project. This is what I think would help l10n teams to work faster but you may have others in mind. So please review and rank the list. If you have other tickets, also add them in the ranking. Thanks a lot in advance!

HI Sophie

My suggestions for weblate are

1) a link in the Weblate UI to go to the root of the project. In other words: to be able to go directly to

https://translations.documentfoundation.org/languages/pt_BR/libo_help-master/

without having to select language (menu Languages - pt-BR) and then click in LibreOfficeHelp - master.

2) Have Machine Translation as a suggestion alongside with Memory Translation.

Today, in Help long strings, I copy&pasta between Weblate and a free machine translation service (Google, Bing, Deepl, Matecat...) to spare typing effort especially when weblate memory translation returns no match.

Machine translation served as suggestion forces a second read before committing translation.

3) Remove the extra duplicate Glossary projects I have in my weblate screen (I have 6 in the master UI project and 3 entries in the master Help)

Thanks for the nice work of the L10n team
Olivier

Thanks in advance,

Hi Olivier,

Answering in detail to your request,

HI Sophie

1) a link in the Weblate UI to go to the root of the project. In other words: to be able to go directly to

https://translations.documentfoundation.org/languages/pt_BR/libo_help-master/

I guess this is what Tuomas requested on #5447

without having to select language (menu Languages - pt-BR) and then click in LibreOfficeHelp - master.

You were in the team meeting yesterday when we discussed it. Before going there, we need to investigate on several topics. Following that, I wanted to open another thread to get feedback on Matecat that you proposed (thanks :). Testing it this morning, I see it covers a good list of languages and several formats. Compared to the others, it would remove the expensive costs of some or legal issues.

3) Remove the extra duplicate Glossary projects I have in my weblate screen (I have 6 in the master UI project and 3 entries in the master Help)

We discussed this also already. If I remember well removing projects will remove duplicate glossaries (1 entry per project). Cloph will upgrade Weblate to 4.10 soon and I think (I'll ask him for confirmation) he will remove 7.0 and 7.1 at the same time.
@all: if you think 7.2 should be removed at the same time, let me know

Thanks for the nice work of the L10n team

+1000

I looked more deeply into Matecat now - I never before managed to find information about the way it uses machine translation. It looks like Matecat itself will not give us any benefits. See these resources:

https://guides.matecat.com/my

"By default, we provide Google Translate API (we pay for it and offer it for free to Matecat users). If for any reason the Google Translate API is not available, we automatically switch to the Microsoft Bing API."

https://guides.matecat.com/machine-translation-engines

It looks like ModernMT is the system that is associated with Matecat creators:
https://guides.matecat.com/modernmt-mmt-plug-in

It is open source, even though it has a higher quality version for enterprises:
https://github.com/modernmt/modernmt

Weblate does support it, also with a self-hosted version:
https://github.com/WeblateOrg/weblate/blob/main/weblate/machinery/modernmt.py
https://github.com/WeblateOrg/weblate/issues/1627#issuecomment-657171205

However, Weblate also supports LibreTranslate, which uses OpenNMT at its core:
https://github.com/WeblateOrg/weblate/blob/main/weblate/machinery/libretranslate.py
https://libretranslate.com/
https://github.com/LibreTranslate/LibreTranslate
https://github.com/argosopentech/argos-translate
https://opennmt.net/

Could you please also evaluate LibreTranslate in addition to ModernMT?

I guess this is what Tuomas requested on #5447

What I was referring to in that issue is described here: https://docs.weblate.org/en/latest/workflows.html
Being able to set the translation workflow setting individually for each language could be useful if different language teams prefer different workflows. Currently in Weblate it's only possible to set it for all languages at once.

Best regards,
Tuomas

Hello,

Thanks to the Board for this initiative.

For me the most important enhancement would be the this:
https://github.com/WeblateOrg/weblate/issues/1861
Search should ignore hotkey symbols

However, it looks like it could be difficult to implement in Weblate's current architecture.

The following would be useful for translators who prefer to use external tools for translating:
https://github.com/WeblateOrg/weblate/issues/5519
Glossary import and export with explanations

Might be interesting to TDF:
https://github.com/WeblateOrg/weblate/issues/4551
Download in ODS file format

Hi Sophie,

I am very happy to learn about this effort! My most wanted enhancements
among the mentioned ones would be these three:

https://github.com/WeblateOrg/weblate/issues/4368
Improved presentation of differences in machine translations

Hi Sophie

thanks for this report. For us, all issues are worthy of interest.

However, I opened a new issue for a slowness experimented by our team during the
suggestion's editing, which caused delay in our workflow:

https://github.com/WeblateOrg/weblate/issues/7300[1]

but one of the administrators replied to us to check the server's log in order to verify the
issue. So, I ask to you to check if this is an issue of TDF Installation or a program's bug.

in my opinion, resolving these issues would help a lot (sorted from most important):

https://github.com/WeblateOrg/weblate/issues/4368
Improved presentation of differences in machine translations

https://github.com/WeblateOrg/weblate/issues/6440
Translation Memory Maintenance - Delete Entries

I can also confirm the annoying issue reported by Valter (maybe TDF instance specific?):
https://github.com/WeblateOrg/weblate/issues/7300

Thanks you,

Hi,
I want to vote for something that I'm not sure I've seen on the list:
https://github.com/WeblateOrg/weblate/issues/2969
Dark (Night) theme for Weblate, Sadly it's not divided in tasks but there
are some attempts.

Thanks.

Hi Sophi

As far as I remember, we are experiencing this problem since, at least, the last 3 sessions
of translation. I received another feedback form the developer.

Thanks for the additional information, I'll give them to Cloph who is searching what might be wrong in our instance.

Here it is:
"You can also ask them for upgrade, it might address some issues as well ;-). There were
several performance improvements to labels or variants in case you happen to use these."

We are now at 4.8.1 and Christian will very soon upgrade to the latest version
Cheers
