[writer] How to check a whole table cell ?

Hello,

Using Writer with LibreOffice 3.4.2, I try to check a whole table cell.

Here is an example : http://ca47.fr/LibreOfficeSample-CheckTableCell.odt

Is there any way to do without using 2 misplaced lines ?

Thanks,

Guillaume(Embedded image moved to file: pic11478.jpg)

Any idea ?

Now you can find the example file here :

Any idea ?

- Put cursor in it
- Shift-Arrow down (or up)
- Shift-Arrow up (or down)
  .. ?

Cheers,

OR

Put Mouse Cursor into the cell,
Left-Click and hold,
Drag mouse in any direction to include at least one more cell,
Pull mouse back to original cell and release Left Button
Just that cell is now selected!!

You are both telling the questioner how to *select* a single table cell. It wasn't obvious to me what he meant by "check", but his example document suggests that he wants to create diagonal lines which accurately join the corners of the cell, so that the cell becomes marked, deleted, disabled, crossed out. His example has lines that have evidently been positioned manually and are not as neat as he would no doubt prefer.

I don't see how to do this easily. A workaround may be to fill the cell with a background colour instead (after selecting it as above) - perhaps with a suitable grey?

I am not sure if your question has been understood
If I understand right, you can do what you want in LibreOffice 3.4 :
right click -> format cell > tab border and choose the crossing ones.

Perhaps you should ask for help on the French speaking mailing-list :

Hi,

Sorry, I answered for Calc instead of Writer.
You can copy-paste a table from Calc to Writer.

Best regards
JBF

Right, but this isn't what i try to do.

I want to create a cross inside a cell, in a writer table.

I try with no effect.
I don't understand what this action can make.

Right ! This is a correct option for simple tables. It's not easy to work
with sophisticated Calc tables in Writer.

Thanks for helping.

Right ! I'm going to try this workaround.

Thanks for helping.

Hi

In Calc it was easy but i couldn't see the option in Writer. The closest i
got was to select a cell and right-click
"Paragraph formatting" - Borders
but it didn't have the option of creating diagonals. In Calc it was easy to
select a cell and then either right-click or from the menus
Format - Cells - Borders
Then just click in the centre of the shape in the dialogue box.

Did you find a way to do this in Writer?

Hi.
Yes it's easy in Calc. And it should be too in Writer, but it doesn't.

Someone give me a workaround : using black for cells background color.
That's what I do.

Hi All

I have a couple of problems I need to solve urgently!!

I have two computers here -

1) Running Mint 10 KDE and Open Office 3.2.1
2) Running Mint 9 KDE and Libre-Office 3.3.2.2

I have developed and am running a Membership Database on a daily basis on machine 1and it works perfectly!! I would like to create a Spreadsheet that links to the Database. The DB is "Registered" on the system but if I do a 'Insert>Link to external data', then browse to and select the Database file - nothing happens and the 'link box' remains empty. If I do a 'View>Data Sources' the whole Open-Office Suite just "crashes' totally!! (I use Calc on a regular basis also and it works fine).

On my second machine I have a separate copy of the Database file from machine 1 which is also "Registered" on that machine. If I try to run the database - 'LO Base>Open existing file>Select file>Open' The Base window opens and shows all my Tables, forms etc. But when I select any of these I get the following error...

"Connection to 'My DB' couldn't be established.
GENERAL ERROR: org.hsqldb.lib.FileSystem RunTime Error:
Java.IO Exception: /home/tinderbox/ooobuild/build/libre-3.3.2.2/package/source/xstor/xstorage.cxx: :3323;"

Also if I try to run my Database on this machine I get the exact same error. I can select it and the Base window comes up showing all my tables, forms etc but if I select anything the error comes up. This is very distressing as it means I can not move to Libre-Office if I can't run my Database which works fine in OO!!!

Any thoughts or suggestions on these problems??

Thanks in advance

Ian Whitfield.

Hi
I don't know much about this but

1.  Is your java version higher than _21?  if so it would be best to install the _21 just for LibreOffice& OpenOffice.  The more recent ones cause problems.  Find out which version by
Tools - Options - LibreOffice/OpenOffice/General - Java

2.  Do you really need a spreadsheet?  A query or even a report can be made to look like a spreadsheet?

Thanks Tom

Machine 2 has Java _20

Would be interested to hear about this.....
I need a printable document that up-dates automatically from the DB to transfer to my WebSite.

Thanks

The "integration" of HSQLDB into a so called "database document" was the biggest mistake ever. Just to be clear: HSQLDB is a great software and so is LibreOffice. The way how both products are merged into one container format generates a caricature of a database which looks and feels a little bit like an MS Access file.

Creating a real HSQLDB and connecting a separate Base document to it is very easy. Just set up a HSQLDB server for your local network or for the local machine and import the script file of your embedded database.

(how to link/copy any type of database to sheet cells)

Hi Ian,

On my second machine I have a separate copy of the Database file from
machine 1 which is also "Registered" on that machine. If I try to run
the database - 'LO Base>Open existing file>Select file>Open' The Base
window opens and shows all my Tables, forms etc. But when I select any
of these I get the following error...

"Connection to 'My DB' couldn't be established.
GENERAL ERROR: org.hsqldb.lib.FileSystem RunTime Error:
Java.IO Exception:
/home/tinderbox/ooobuild/build/libre-3.3.2.2/package/source/xstor/xstorage.cxx:
:3323;"

Hmm, you are using a tinderbox build because that's what that message
seems to imply from the path ???

As the message further says, this is an IO exception :

lines 3319-3323 in xstorage.cxx deal with this and throw an exception if
the data in the container file can not be accessed.

Is your ODB file writable ?

Are you sure that the paths (and their read/write access) from the first
machine are the same as the second machine - if not, then your ODB
container as copied is going to have a problem trying resolve the paths...

Most notably, the versions of HSQLDB used between OOo 3.2.1 and
LibreOffice are different !!! This is known to have caused problems in
the past.

I don't know whether any of the above will solve your problem, but it
might be worth looking into it.

The so called "database document" behaves like an extension. Every time you "open the document" the office suite extracts the HSQLDB into your temporary directory as specified in Tools>Options>Paths. Every time you "close the database document" the office suite rebuilds the package. Needless to say that this puts your data at more risk, the more data you compress and decompress.

I use to declare ~/.libreoffice/3/user/temp/ as temporary directory for the office suite. All embedded HSQLDB installs into this directory.

Hi Ian,

First, there are far more knowledgeable people responding here than I am. But here are a few thoughts from reading this thread. These suggestions are from my having used a database similar to yours for years in Open Office, and since roughly 6 months in LibreOffice since I switched from OpenOffice. I copy my database to 3 other computers running LibreOffice (I did the same thing when I was using Open Office) and I've never had any issues at all on any of the computers. So your doing it should work perfectly fine. I also don't think this is a Java issue. I'm assuming you have both LibreOffice and Open Office installed. I've never had both on the same computer at the same time. When I moved to LibreOffice, before I installed it, I removed Open Office. Maybe there is a conflict on the second computer since I see ooobuild in the path below. The second thought is maybe LibreOffice actually isn't finding your database on the second computer. I would compare your setup, paths, etc. on the first computer with the one on the second computer, and make sure on the second computer LibreOffice is looking in the right place for the database. I always have a folder under home/documents/Database where I keep my database on all of the computers.
